The Week in UK Guidance
Week of 24 August 2026. What changed for UK general practice this week: NICE, MHRA safety updates and the primary care journals, gathered every Monday.
NICE
Weekly insulin jab could cut injections from 365 a year to just 52
Hundreds of thousands of people with type 2 diabetes could swap daily insulin injections for a once-a-week jab, following a NICE recommendation.
The journals
BJGP Open: HATCHing plans: a qualitative study of how discharge communication can support expert generalist management.
A qualitative study found that GPs use an HATCH process (Holistic Adjustment To Context after Hospital discharge) to manage post-discharge care, but discharge summaries often lack the explanatory context needed for safe decision-making.
BJGP Open: Slow walking speed and risk of cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes: a systematic review.
A systematic review of four studies involving 132,967 people with type 2 diabetes found reduced walking speed strongly associated with increased cardiovascular risk (hazard ratios 1.18 to 5.88).
European Journal of General Practice: Beyond diagnosis in general practice: Predictive processing, a novel framework for persistent physical symptoms.
An opinion paper proposes predictive processing theory to explain persistent physical symptoms: symptoms arise from the brain's predictions and prior beliefs rather than passive pathology reflection, shifting the GP's role after normal investigations.
