Breastfeeding Problems

Written and reviewed by practising UK GPs, overseen by our Clinical Advisory Officer.

🧭 When to suspect

Breastfeeding problems are common and usually fixable. Suspect one in the mother who presents with nipple pain, breast engorgement, features of mastitis, or worries about milk supply. Suspect one in the infant with poor feeding, faltering growth, prolonged jaundice, or signs of dehydration.

The single most useful step is to observe a feed. Most nipple pain and most β€œlow supply” concerns trace back to poor attachment, which can be seen and corrected at the bedside before anything is prescribed or stopped.
